Main Chapel (apse)
The Cappella Maggiore forms the apse of the Chiesa di Santa Caterina d'Alessandria and is the largest of five chapels across the eastern end. It houses the high altar and is dominated by an imposing Gothic four-light window featuring images of saints that commands the rear wall. Chapel of the Fallen (former Chapel of San Domenico)
The Cappella dei Caduti, formerly known as the Cappella di San Domenico, is a two-bay side chapel with barrel vaulting located before the transept on the right wall of the nave. It represents the only completed section of an ambitious 14th-century expansion scheme intended to transform the church into a three-nave structure—a project that remained unfinished. The chapel stands as a testament to Pisa's medieval architectural aspirations.
Sculptural Group of the Annunciation by Nino Pisano
This marble sculptural group of the Annunciation was created by Nino Pisano, son of Andrea Pisano, in 1368. The figures of the Virgin and the Archangel Gabriel flank the triumphal arch that frames the entrance to the chapel. You'll find this significant work of art in Pisa's cathedral, where it remains one of the finest examples of 14th-century Italian sculpture.
Pipe Organ (right transept)
The pipe organ in the right transept of Pisa Cathedral is an electronic transmission instrument with an independent mobile console. Originally built by Balbiani in 1911 for the cathedral, it was relocated to its present position in 1987 by Genoese organ builders Fratelli Marin. All of the instrument's sound-producing material is housed within a single body at ground level, contained within a simple wooden case at its base.
Dominican Convent with Central Courtyard
The Dominican convent stands to the left of the church and was rebuilt following the devastating fire of 1651, constructed upon the foundations of the original medieval monastery. The building is organised around a central courtyard that replicates the space formerly occupied by the cloister. To the left of the church façade sits the canon's residence.
Right Side Aisle (Unfinished Extension)
The right lateral chapel is a two-bay side chapel with barrel vaulting that opens onto the right wall of the nave, before the transept. It represents the only completed section of an ambitious three-nave expansion planned for the first half of the 14th century, which was never finished. This unfinished extension offers a glimpse into medieval architectural ambitions in Pisa.
