About this place

The iconic Romanesque bell tower of Pisa's cathedral stands independent and distinctly tilted. Construction began in 1173 and was completed in 1372, resulting in a structure 55-58 metres tall with a lean of approximately 3.9 degrees. Recognised as a UNESCO World Heritage site since 1987, the tower remains one of Italy's most recognisable monuments. Visitors can climb 294 steps to reach the top, where panoramic views across Pisa reward the ascent.

1
Bell Chamber

Bell Chamber

The Bell Chamber crowns the top of the Leaning Tower of Pisa, added in 1372 as the eighth storey of the structure. It houses seven bells tuned to the major scale, rung before cathedral masses and at noon via an electromechanical system. Visitors climbing to this level gain access to the chamber whilst ascending the tower's 296 steps.

2
Fish Market Hall

Fish Market Hall

The Sala del Pesce is the interior space at the base of the Tower of Pisa, a distinctive chamber that opens to the sky—essentially the central void of the tower's hollow cylinder. It takes its name from a bas-relief adorning its wall, depicting a fish, a religious symbol in Christianity. This architectural feature offers a unique perspective on one of the world's most famous structures.

3
Campana Pasquereccia

Campana Pasquereccia

The Campana Pasquereccia is the oldest of seven bells housed in Pisa's Leaning Tower, cast in 1262 by Pisan craftsman Lotteringio di Bartolomeo (known as Locterineus de Pisis in Latin records). Weighing approximately 1,014 kg, it produces the note A sharp (A#3) and forms part of the tower's bell concert, tuned according to the major musical scale. What to see: visitors can experience this historic bell within one of Italy's most iconic structures.

4
Exterior Loggias

Exterior Loggias

The exterior loggias comprise six open arcaded storeys surrounding the cylindrical body of the Torre Pendente di Pisa, positioned between the blind arcading at the base and the bell chamber above. Each level features a gallery defined by columns supporting small round arches, a decorative scheme that echoes the façade of the Cathedral of Santa Maria.
