Audio guide La Conciergerie in English
In this audio guide, Emily Thompson takes you through La Conciergerie telling the story as you walk. In your accent, no need to read signs — just let your eyes take in what's in front of you.
What you'll hear inside La Conciergerie:
- 1Salle des Gens d'Armes
The Salle des Gens d'Armes is Europe's largest non-religious Gothic hall, built in the 14th century.
- 2Salle des Gardes
This chamber was constructed under Philippe IV as an antechamber to Parliament, though it later served a grimmer purpose as a holding cell for the city's poorest detainees.
- 3Chapelle des Girondins
Built in 1776, this chapel served the imprisoned, with women attending services from a gallery above the main floor.
- 4Expiratory Chapel of Marie-Antoinette
This commemorative chapel was built in 1815 by Louis XVIII on the exact site where Marie-Antoinette's prison cell once stood.
- 5Cour des Femmes
The Cour des Femmes is the courtyard where female prisoners, amongst them Marie Antoinette, were permitted exercise.
- 6Tour de l'Horloge
This 14th-century tower once housed Paris's first public clock and is adorned with sculptures of Justice and Law by Germain Pilon.
- 7Tour Bonbec
Bonbec Tower is a circular 13th-century structure that once housed a torture chamber during the Reign of Terror.
- 8Caesar and Silver Towers
A pair of circular towers dating from the 14th century, these structures stand sentinel at the northern gateway of Paris.
