Audio guide Château d'If in English
In this audio guide, Emily Thompson takes you through Château d'If telling the story as you walk. In your accent, no need to read signs — just let your eyes take in what's in front of you.
What you'll hear inside Château d'If:
- 1Saint-Christophe Tower
The tallest tower in the castle at 22 metres, positioned to the northwest, this keeps tower—also known as the tower of homage—commanded the principal navigation channel into the port.
- 2Saint-Jaume Tower
One of three cylindrical towers at the fort, positioned to the northeast and fitted with stacked casemates and artillery embrasures.
- 3Maugovert Tower
Torre Maugovert stands to the southeast of the fort, connected via a broad artillery platform and positioned to protect and monitor the city.
- 4Edmond Dantès' Cell
This tourist reconstruction shows the prison cell of Edmond Dantès, the protagonist from Alexandre Dumas's The Count of Monte Cristo, housed within the fortress's original dungeons.
- 5Abbot Faria's Cell
This reconstruction depicts the cell of the Abbé Faria, the legendary character from Alexandre Dumas's novel.
- 6Gunslinger Cells
Individual cells on the first floor where wealthy prisoners were housed.
- 7Republican Graffiti Memorial
A striking 25-metre frieze of 96 inscriptions carved by prisoners from the 1848 Revolution into the walls of the central courtyard.
- 8Caserna Vauban
Built by Vauban to house soldiers, the Caserna Vauban stands to the right as you exit the fortress.
