About this place
The square opened in 1866, named after the Peruvian port where a significant naval battle took place that same year. But what you see today really took shape much later, when the Gran Vía construction project transformed this area between 1917 and 1922. Standing here, you're essentially at the intersection of old and modern Madrid – the square connects Preciados street with Gran Vía, creating this natural meeting point that locals and visitors inevitably cross.
The Carrión Building dominates everything with its art deco curves and that famous illuminated advertisement. Built in 1933, it's one of those structures that makes you stop and crane your neck, especially if you catch it at the right angle from street level. The building houses the Capitol cinema, and on weekends you'll often see lines of people waiting for the latest films.
What strikes me about this place is how it manages to feel both spacious and intimate. The pedestrian area gives you room to breathe, yet you're surrounded by the constant flow of Madrid life. Fnac occupies a prominent corner, and there's always this mix of tourists consulting maps, office workers cutting through on their way somewhere else, and teenagers meeting up before heading down to Sol or up toward Malasaña.
The metro entrance right in the square makes it incredibly accessible, connecting you to lines 3 and 5. I've noticed that many people use Callao as their reference point when giving directions in central Madrid – it's just one of those places everyone knows.
If you want to things to do in Madrid that capture the city's rhythm, spending some time here watching the flow of people while soaking in the urban atmosphere works perfectly. The square feels most alive in the early evening, when the lights start coming on and the city shifts into its nighttime personality.
