About this place
The transformation happened gradually through the 1980s and 90s. Back then, the streets around Plaza de Chueca were dealing with drug trafficking and street prostitution. But as Madrid's LGBT community began opening bars and shops here, everything changed. Places like Café Figueroa and the Berkana bookstore were pioneers, creating spaces that didn't exist elsewhere in the city at the time.
What I find interesting is how the neighborhood kept some of its original character even as it gentrified. You still get glimpses of old Madrid between the boutique shops and trendy cafés. The area used to be famous for audio equipment stores along Barquillo street and outlet shoe shops on Augusto Figueroa. Most of those have disappeared now, replaced by fashion stores and restaurants that cater to a very different crowd.
The streets are compact and walkable, bounded roughly by Fernando VI to the north and Gran Vía to the south. It's the kind of place where you can spend an afternoon just wandering, though it gets incredibly busy on weekends. The energy is undeniably youthful and cosmopolitan, but it's also become quite expensive compared to what it was twenty years ago.
During Pride week, the whole area transforms completely. But even on regular days, there's something distinctly open and welcoming about the atmosphere here. The San Antón market is worth checking out if you're in the area – it's a good example of how traditional Madrid markets have adapted to changing neighborhoods.
Discover all the secrets of Chueca with our complete Madrid audio guide as you explore the narrow streets that tell the story of one of Europe's most significant urban transformations. The neighborhood manages to feel both historic and contemporary, which isn't something you encounter in every corner of central Madrid.
