About this place
The district owes its existence to José de Salamanca y Mayol, the first Marquess of Salamanca. This Málaga-born entrepreneur saw an opportunity in the 1860s when Queen Isabel II approved Carlos María de Castro's expansion plan for Madrid. He invested heavily in land bounded by what are now Serrano, Alcalá, and Francisco Silvela streets. Ironically, this ambitious real estate venture bankrupted him, and he died in 1883 with his grand project unfinished.
Walking along Serrano street today, you'd never guess the neighborhood's troubled beginnings. The construction wasn't completed until the 1930s, fifty years after Salamanca's death. Now it forms the heart of Madrid's Golden Mile, where international luxury brands line perfectly manicured streets.
What strikes me most about this district is how it balances commercial glamour with residential life. Beyond the flagship stores on Ortega y Gasset, you'll find tree-lined avenues where families live in belle époque buildings. The architecture tells the story of Madrid's 19th-century boom – grand facades that speak to the optimism of the era.
The area isn't just about shopping, though that's certainly a draw. Plaza de toros de Las Ventas sits on the district's edge, while the elegant iglesia de San Manuel y San Benito provides a spiritual counterpoint to the commercial energy. The Quinta del Berro offers green space, and you're always close to the Puerta de Alcalá.

Getting around is straightforward thanks to excellent metro connections, and the district's grid layout makes navigation simple. The density might surprise you – over 27,000 people per square kilometer – but the wide avenues and quality urban planning prevent it from feeling cramped. This is urban living done right, combining 19th-century vision with contemporary comfort.
