Recinto amurallado construido en la segunda mitad del siglo XVIII por orden del rey Carlos III. El proyecto fue dirigido por los ingenieros militares Mateo Vodopich y Sebastián Feringán para mejorar las murallas ya existentes de la ciudad de Cartagena. Ésta construcción es conocida como la Muralla de Carlos III, y tiene un trazado de 4.790 metros, el cual envuelve la ciudad y el Arsenal, y está dividido en seis frentes: Frente Sur (Muralla del Mar), Frente Este (Batel y Puertas de San José), Frente Norte (Muralla de Tierra o del Almarjal), Frente de las Puertas de Madrid, Frente Oeste o de Benipila y Frente de Galeras o de Algamecas. La parte exterior del muro presenta un zócalo formado por grandes sillares, mientras que el resto está construido con bloques de piedra y rematada por un cordón magistral que marca la diferencia entre el alzado y la coronación. La artillería se disponía en barbeta, sin protección para el artillero, permitiendo un mayor número de cañones

Como se puede comprobar en estas fotografías, Cartagena era un lugar infranqueable, las enormes murallas que rodeaban la Ciudad eran la garantía de que nadie podía entrar para conquistarla. Carlos III fue quien ordenó construir éstas murallas con el fin de proteger el armamento militar que había en la "Capital del Departamento Marítimo del Mediterráneo". Habiendo pasado varios siglos, hoy día "parte" de estas murallas se conservan perfectamente, esto hay que agradecerlo a las autoridades que han ido pasando por sus correspondientes cargos y han respetado escrupulosamente esta maravilla arquitectónica
