El Fuerte de Navidad se alza en la entrada del puerto de Cartagena como una pieza clave del cinturón defensivo diseñado en el siglo XVIII para cerrar la bocana desde ambos márgenes. No actuaba solo: completaba y cruzaba su fuego con el de las baterías de Trincabotijas, Santa Ana, San Leandro y otras posiciones del sistema borbónico. Juntos formaban un “peine” artillero concebido para impedir que cualquier escuadra enemiga pudiera franquear la canal. Su planta en herradura, abierta al mar, fue reformada en el XIX para adaptarse a la artillería de avancarga y, más tarde, a piezas de mayor calibre. Pero todo aquel despliegue técnico tuvo un destino paradójico: el Fuerte de Navidad nunca entró en combate real y la fortaleza quedó relegada a funciones protocolarias, como realizar salvas de honor y ceremonias navales, más simbólicas que defensivas.

Visitado de noche es segura la vuelta, de día. Situación inmejorable para unas maravillosas perspectivas cartageneras. El camino, para hacerlo corriendo vs andando, complejo (ir con mucho cuidado porque no hay márgenes...).
