What you'll hear inside Temple of Olympian Zeus:

  • 1
    Standing Corinthian Columns

Sixteen standing Corinthian marble columns, each rising 17 metres high, are all that remain of the original temple that once boasted 104 columns.

  • 2
    Temple Platform

The rectangular limestone foundation of a colossal temple, measuring 108 by 41 metres, this platform in Athens bears witness to the scale and ambition of ancient construction.

  • 3
    Sacred Precinct

This marble-paved precinct was built by Hadrian to encircle the temple and was adorned with numerous statues of the emperor.

  • 4
    Temple of Olympian Zeus

The remains of an ancient open-air sanctuary dedicated to Zeus, predating the construction of the grand temple.

  • 5
    Temple of Cronus and Rhea

A modest auxiliary temple mentioned by Pausanias, situated within the sacred precinct.

  • 6
    Olympia Sanctuary

The Recinto de Gaia Olimpia is a sacred precinct in Athens dedicated to the Earth goddess.

Positive experience at the Temple of Olympian Zeus, mainly because of its historical importance and the impressive scale of what remains. It’s an iconic site in Athens and worth visiting to understand the grandeur of ancient Greek architecture. That said, it feels unfair to charge the full entrance fee when a significant part of the archaeological remains is covered by scaffolding due to ongoing works, making it difficult to properly appreciate the site. While renovations are necessary, a reduced ticket or some form of discount should be applied during this period.
