Buyongji Pond and Buyongjeong Pavilion
Buyongji Pond is a rectangular body of water measuring 34.5 metres east to west and 29.4 metres north to south, constructed with stone posts and featuring a circular island at its centre. The adjacent Buyongjeong Pavilion, positioned on the pond's southern edge, served as King Jeongjo's retreat for viewing flowers, fishing and composing poetry. Juhamnu Pavilion (Royal Library)
Juhamnu Pavilion is a two-storey structure perched on a hilltop overlooking the Buyongji lotus pond within the Secret Garden of Changdeokgung Palace. Built in 1776, the year King Jeongjo ascended the throne, it served as the royal library and intellectual and political hub of the Joseon dynasty. Aeryeonji Pond and Aeryeonjeong Pavilion
Aeryeonji pond, whose name translates as "pond where lotus flowers bloom", is a rectangular body of water bordered by stone posts on all four sides. Unlike the nearby Buyongji, it has no central island. At its northern end stands the pavilion Aeryeonjeong, distinguished by its unusual design—two of its four pillars sit submerged in the water. The entire area is closely connected to Crown Prince Hyomyeong, son of King Sunjo. What to see here includes both the tranquil pond and the striking pavilion structure.
Jondeokjeong Pavilion
Jondeokjeong is one of the Secret Garden's oldest pavilions, built in 1644, and stands at the centre of a distinctive curved pond. During the Japanese occupation, three original pools—two square and one circular—were unified to create this feature. The pavilion is notable for its unusual double hexagonal roof and ornate ceiling decoration, which showcases twin dragons in blue and gold, surrounded by chintamani jewels. What to see here gives visitors insight into the intricate craftsmanship of Joseon-era design.
Pabellón Gwallamjeong
The Gwallamjeong Pavilion is a distinctive structure within the Secret Garden, situated near the Jondeokjeong pond. What sets it apart is its fan-shaped roof – a unique architectural feature that makes it the only pavilion of its kind throughout Korea. This singular design element has made it a notable point of interest for visitors exploring the garden's traditional buildings and landscape.
Yeongyeongdang Residence
Yeongyeongdang is a residential complex within the Secret Garden that exemplifies Joseon dynasty architecture. Unlike royal buildings, it eschews vibrant dancheong colours in favour of austere styling. Surrounded by landscaped gardens, flowering plants, ponds and pavilions, the compound's restrained aesthetic provides a striking contrast within the palatial setting. Worth visiting for its authentic representation of yangban (aristocratic) dwellings.
Yeonghwadang Pavilion
Yeonghwadang Pavilion sits at the northeast corner of the Buyongji Pond, one of several structures flanking this square lotus pool. Originally serving as a royal space, the pavilion functioned as both a ceremonial venue and administrative centre within the palace gardens. What to see here includes the pavilion's traditional architecture and its connection to the pond's serene landscape.
Pabellón Sajeonggibigak
Pabellón Sajeonggibigak sits on the western edge of the Buyongji lotus pond, facing the central island. From this vantage point, it offers the closest observation platform to the island and the pine tree that crowns it, making it an ideal spot to view the pond's serene waters and the gardens beyond.
Pabellón Seonhyangjae
Seonhyangjae Pavilion is an adjoining structure to the sarangchae within the Yeongyeongdang residential complex, situated to the east of the main residence. Originally serving as a study room, it commands attention for its distinctive architectural blend—Chinese-style walls combined with Western-style shutters. This fusion of design elements makes it a notable example of how Korean aristocratic residences incorporated international influences during its period.
Pabellón Nongsujeong
Pabellón Nongsujeong is a modest pavilion perched at the highest point of the sloped hill behind the Yeongyeongdang complex within the Secret Garden. Its elevated location makes it the perfect vantage point for taking in this section of the garden. What to see here includes panoramic views across the grounds and traditional architectural details. The pavilion marks the natural conclusion to a walk through this quieter part of the historic space.
