In this audio guide, Emily Thompson takes you through Collegiate Church of Santa Juliana telling the story as you walk. In your accent, no need to read signs — just let your eyes take in what's in front of you.
What you'll hear inside Collegiate Church of Santa Juliana:
- 1Romanesque Cloister
A late 12th-century cloister featuring 43 carved capitals depicting biblical narratives and foliage, regarded as one of the finest examples of Cantabrian Romanesque architecture.
- 2South Main Doorway
Romanesque portal featuring richly carved archivolts and a Christ in Majesty set within a mandorla, supported by four angels.
- 3Bell Tower
A square-based tower positioned at the foot of the main nave, bringing architectural harmony to the overall structure.
- 4Semicircular Apses
Three stepped semicircular apses terminating the choir ends of the naves, roofed with barrel vaults.
- 5Tomb of Saint Juliana
Tomb that houses the relics of Saint Juliana of Nicomedia, the martyr whose veneration led to the foundation of the monastery.
- 6Lantern Tower over the Crossing
A square tower rising above the transept crossing, topped with an off-centre dome supported by pendentives—a distinctive architectural feature.
