Audio guide Ara Pacis Augustae in English
In this audio guide, Emily Thompson takes you through Ara Pacis Augustae telling the story as you walk. In your accent, no need to read signs — just let your eyes take in what's in front of you.
What you'll hear inside Ara Pacis Augustae:
- 1Outer Enclosure of the Ara Pacis
Marble structure surrounding the altar, decorated in two registers: vegetative motifs in the lower section and historical and allegorical scenes in the upper section.
- 2South Side Procession
Relief depicting the inauguration ceremony of 9 BCE with Augustus as Pontifex Maximus, his imperial family, and members of the official procession.
- 3Lupercale Panel
Relief on the western side depicting Mars and the shepherd Faustulus observing the she-wolf nursing Romulus and Remus beside the ficus ruminalis.
- 4Relief of the Sacrifice of Aeneas
A relief depicting Aeneas with veiled head performing a sacrifice to the Penates, accompanied by his son Ascanius and two young attendants.
- 5Saturnia Tellus Panel
One of the finest preserved reliefs depicting an allegory of the Golden Age, featuring a maternal figure surrounded by putti and two nymphs representing air and sea.
- 6Inner Altar
The altar itself stands upon a podium of three steps, adorned with allegorical female figures representing the provinces of the Empire and reliefs depicting the annual sacrifice.
- 7Internal Decorations of the Enclosure
Interior surfaces featuring vertical fluting that mimics a wooden palisade, with festoons supported by ox-skulls adorned with garlands and phialai.
