Audio guide Circus Maximus in English

In this audio guide, Emily Thompson takes you through Circus Maximus telling the story as you walk. In your accent, no need to read signs — just let your eyes take in what's in front of you.

What you'll hear inside Circus Maximus:

  • 1
    Torre della Moletta

A 12th-century medieval tower featuring an internal staircase that leads to a panoramic viewpoint overlooking the entire archaeological area of the Circo Massimo.

  • 2
Carceres (Stables of the Circus Maximus)

Starting gates for the chariot races, featuring a simultaneous release mechanism and built in 329 BC, positioned at an oblique angle.

  • 3
    Central Spine

A central ornamental structure adorned with statues, shrines and small temples, which housed seven eggs and seven dolphins used to mark the completion of each lap.

  • 4
    Galleries of the Cavea

Underground passages that led to the seating tiers, where you can see remains of ancient Roman latrines.

  • 5
    Tabernae Antiguas

Ruins of ancient shops, inns and money-changing offices connected to horse-racing betting operations.

  • 6
    Arch of Titus

Remains of a triumphal arch built in 81 AD, featuring three interconnected arches at its curved centre, supported by columns standing 10 metres high.
