Naval Battery Carlo Alberto Racchia
The Batteria Antinave Carlo Alberto Racchia, also known as 'di Montenero', served as the north-western defensive position in the external fortification system protecting the Gulf of La Spezia. Completed between 1933 and 1936, the battery's firepower extended as far as Punta Mesco. Built across multiple levels, it rises from just a few metres above sea level to over 100 metres in its innermost structures, reflecting the strategic complexity of its design.

Botanical Trail
The Percorso Botanico is a waymarked trail through the former military site of Batería Racchia in Riomaggiore, showcasing Mediterranean scrubland with informative panels. The route explains local flora species and vegetation types—maquis, garriga and halophytes—alongside their ecology. An observation area allows birdwatching, where you may spot resident species such as the Sardinian warbler and tern, alongside gulls and falcons that nest on the coast. Migratory birds also pass through seasonally. What to see includes diverse Mediterranean habitats and rich wildlife in a compact, accessible setting.
