About this place

This small 15th-century oratory, built in 1480, sits on the hillside of Cerricò next to the castle in Riomaggiore. Erected as a grateful offering following the end of a plague epidemic, the chapel features a whitewashed façade. Inside you'll find a triptych depicting the Virgin and Child with Saints Rocco and Sebastiano, along with a figure of Saint Rocco. Baroque Altar

Baroque Altar

The high altar of the Oratorio dei Santi Rocco e Sebastiano in Riomaggiore showcases Baroque artistry as the centrepiece of the chapel's interior. Originally displayed above it was a significant early 16th-century triptych depicting the Virgin and Child flanked by Saints Rocco and Sebastiano, attributed to the Maestro delle Cinque Terre. This Renaissance masterpiece represents an important example of local artistic heritage within the village's religious architecture.

Architrave with Low Relief of the Saints

Architrave with Low Relief of the Saints

The ornate stone architrave crowning the entrance to the oratory is Riomaggiore's most striking architectural detail. Three figures are carved in bas-relief across its face: Saint Sebastian, the symbol of Christ, and Saint Rocco. The carving of Saint Rocco distinctly bears the marks of plague upon his body, transforming this stone lintel into a direct memorial of the plague that prompted the oratory's construction.

Barrel Vault with Devotional Frescoes

Barrel Vault with Devotional Frescoes

The oratory in Riomaggiore features a distinctive barrel vault with a depressed curve, its interior walls adorned with devotional frescoes. The single room benefits from subtle natural light filtering through narrow, splayed windows set deep within the thick stone walls. This modest but atmospheric space preserves examples of the religious artwork typical of the period, accessible to visitors seeking what to see in this Cinque Terre village.
