1
Baptistry of St John

Baptistry of St John

The Baptistry of San Giovanni stands opposite the cathedral's western end and is Italy's largest baptistry, with a circumference of 107.25 metres. Within the monumental complex of Pisa, it symbolises the first stage of the Christian journey: baptism and the beginning of faith. Despite its impressive scale, the interior is surprisingly austere, yet houses exceptional sculptural works and possesses remarkable acoustics that make it well worth visiting.

2
Nicola Pisano's Pulpit (Baptistry)

Nicola Pisano's Pulpit (Baptistry)

Nicola Pisano's pulpit stands inside Pisa's Baptistery, completed in 1260. Carved from Carrara marble, it marks a turning point in Italian Renaissance sculpture. The piece is particularly significant as the first work of its kind in Tuscany to depart from the traditional square or rectangular design, instead introducing a striking hexagonal form. What to see here is a masterwork that fundamentally changed the course of sculptural innovation.

3
Gate of San Ranieri

Gate of San Ranieri

The Porta di San Ranieri is a bronze door in the right transept of Pisa Cathedral, facing the Leaning Tower. Comprising twenty-four panels depicting scenes from the New Testament, it ranks among the few surviving major works by sculptor Bonanno Pisano. The original is housed in the Museo dell'Opera del Duomo, whilst the door you see at the cathedral is a high-quality replica. Well worth visiting to appreciate this remarkable medieval craftsmanship.
