Audio guide Palace of the Normans in English
In this audio guide, Emily Thompson takes you through Palace of the Normans telling the story as you walk. In your accent, no need to read signs — just let your eyes take in what's in front of you.
What you'll hear inside Palace of the Normans:
- 1Hall of Hercules
The Sala d'Ercole is the semicircular parliamentary chamber within Palazzo dei Normanni, which has housed the Sicilian Regional Assembly since 1947.
- 2Hall of Roger
Sala di Ruggero sits within the Torre Joharia and showcases a rectangular chamber with a ribbed vault adorned by an extraordinary mosaic cycle set against gold-leaf tesserae.
- 3Pisan Tower
The Torre Pisana, also called Torre Santa Ninfa, is the oldest section of the Palazzo dei Normanni and one of only two surviving Norman towers from the original structure.
- 4Hall of the Winds
The Sala dei Venti is one of the most striking rooms within Palazzo dei Normanni, housed in the Torre Joharia—an Arabic name meaning 'jewelled tower'—and opening directly into the Sala di Ruggero.
- 5Torre Joharia
Torre Joharia, also known as the Tower of the Treasure, stands within the Palazzo dei Normanni and dates to 1132, when it was built by Roger II of Sicily.
- 6Duke of Montalto Rooms
The Salas Duque de Montalto are a series of interconnected rooms on the ground floor and basement level of Palazzo dei Normanni, positioned adjacent to and beneath the Cortile Maqueda.
- 7Hall of the Viceroys
The Sala dei Viceré (Hall of the Viceroys) takes its name from the 21 portraits lining its walls, depicting viceroys, lieutenant governors and presidents of the Bourbon Kingdom of Sicily.
- 8Pompeian Room
The Sala Pompeiana is part of the Galleria Pompeiana, commissioned by Leopold of Bourbon during his time as viceroy of Sicily from 1830 to 1835.
