Naples is the sort of city that hits you before you've even found your bearings. The historic centre — a UNESCO World Heritage Site since 1995 — is one of the densest concentrations of art, architecture and street life in all of Europe. Spaccanapoli slices straight through it like a fault line, the Spanish Quarters tumble down from either side, and somewhere beneath your feet lies a labyrinth of tunnels that has been quietly accumulating history for two millennia. There is nowhere quite like it.

What to See in Naples

Church of San Gregorio Armeno

This opulent 16th-century Baroque church is one of the most lavishly decorated in the city. Its monastic cloister is a genuine sanctuary from the chaos outside, and the bell tower — built directly over the remains of a Roman temple — is a quietly extraordinary piece of layered history.

Church of Santa Luciella ai Librai

Tucked into a narrow alleyway off the main drag, this tiny church is home to what locals call the skull with ears — a genuinely macabre Neapolitan curiosity that speaks to the city's deep-rooted cult of the dead. Easy to miss, impossible to forget once you know it's there.

Church of Santa Maria delle Anime del Purgatorio ad Arco

A 17th-century church that operates on two levels — literally. The Baroque upper church is striking enough, but descend below ground and you enter an underground space filled with skulls and the remnants of a centuries-old practice of soul worship. It's unsettling, fascinating and entirely Neapolitan.

Gallerie d'Italia - Palazzo Zevallos Stigliano

Right on Via Toledo, this Baroque palace houses one of the most significant single paintings you'll see on any Italian trip: The Martyrdom of Saint Ursula, widely accepted as Caravaggio's final known work. The building itself is worth the visit, but that canvas alone justifies the detour.

Donnaregina Monumental Complex

A 14th-century medieval church with an exceptional set of Pietro Cavallini frescoes — some of the finest surviving examples of pre-Renaissance painting in southern Italy. The adjacent diocesan museum brings together Baroque works that round out the picture considerably.

Palazzo dello Spagnolo

In the Rione Sanità district, this 18th-century Baroque palace is famous above all for its extraordinary double staircase — a so-called 'falcon wing' design that sweeps upward with theatrical confidence. It's a short walk from the centre but well off the standard tourist circuit.

Borgo Marinari

The small fishing harbour at the foot of Castel dell'Ovo is one of the more peaceful spots in an otherwise relentlessly energetic city. Colourful boats, views across to Vesuvius, and a handful of restaurants make it a natural place to pause mid-afternoon before pushing on.

Port'Alba

A 17th-century gateway that connects Piazza Dante with the historic centre — and, more notably, home to what is considered Europe's first dedicated booksellers' street. The second-hand bookshops spilling out onto the pavement here have been a fixture of Neapolitan intellectual life for centuries.

Audio Guide for Naples with Guipock

Getting the most out of a city as layered as Naples takes more than a printed map and a good pair of shoes. The Guipock audio guide Naples app is designed for exactly this kind of city — one where what you can see on the surface is rarely the whole story.

The audio itself is produced using high-quality generated audio across a wide range of languages and regional accents: British English, American English, Australian English, European Spanish, Latin American Spanish, French, Canadian French, German, Austrian German, and more. Whether you're travelling as a solo visitor or with a mixed group, everyone can listen in their own language.

Navigation works via a GPS-guided map that tracks your position as you move through the city. When you arrive at a point of interest, the app notifies you so you can open the audio guide for that stop — no fumbling with paper maps or trying to work out which street you're actually on. In a city where the street layout can feel genuinely bewildering, that matters.

Before you set off, use the offline download feature to save the entire route to your device. Once downloaded, the app runs without any mobile data connection — useful in the historic centre, where you'll want your attention on what's around you rather than your signal strength.

Travelling as a family? The family code feature means a single purchase covers the whole group. Each person uses the app on their own device, in their own language, at their own pace. And for younger visitors, the children's mode adapts the commentary — shorter, more engaging, pitched at an age where a skull in a church needs a rather different kind of explanation than it does for adults.

The Naples audio guide app covers everything from the grand set-pieces to the genuinely obscure — the kind of stops that don't make it into most printed guides but that end up being the ones you talk about afterwards.

How to Make the Most of Your Visit to Naples

Getting to the city is straightforward. Capodichino international airport sits roughly five kilometres from the centre. The Alibus coach service runs directly to Piazza Garibaldi — the main railway station — in around twenty minutes. Taxis operate on a fixed fare to the centre. If you're coming from Rome, the high-speed train takes just over an hour and deposits you right in the heart of things.

Once you're here, the integrated TIC ticket covers metro, bus, funicular and tram services on a single pass. That said, the historic centre rewards walking above almost anything else. The streets are compact, the sightlines constantly surprising, and half the interest lies in what you stumble across between the official stops. The one exception: getting up to the Vomero district requires the funicular, and it's worth the ride.

How long do you need? Two full days gives you a decent run at the historic centre and a few of the outlying neighbourhoods. Three days is more comfortable — it allows for a morning in Chiaia along the seafront, a wander through the Spanish Quarters, and perhaps an afternoon at the Pietrarsa Railway Museum by the bay.

The Spanish Quarters and the Pignasecca fish market are both best visited in the morning, when the activity is at its peak. For a quieter experience of the Rione Sanità — home to Palazzo dello Spagnolo and some of the city's most striking street art — aim for a weekday.

Naples is a year-round destination, but spring (April to June) and autumn (September to October) offer the most agreeable conditions: warm without the oppressive heat of July and August, and noticeably less crowded. Winter is mild by British standards and the city remains fully operational — fewer queues, lower prices, and a more local atmosphere throughout.

One practical note: the historic centre's streets are narrow and the pavements uneven. Comfortable shoes are not optional. And if you're planning to cover serious ground across multiple days, downloading the Guipock route the night before is worth doing — it means you're ready to go the moment you step outside.
