About this place

This 16th-century Baroque oratory was founded by the Confraternity of the Dead and stands as the finest of two oratories in Monterosso al Mare's historic centre. The interior is remarkable for its ornate stuccowork, 1922 frescos, and elaborate skull and skeleton motifs. The chapel also houses a statue of Saint Anthony the Abbot. What to see here reflects the solemn traditions of local confraternities that played an important role in medieval and Renaissance Italian towns.

Interior with Funerary Sculptures

Inside the oratorio, you'll encounter striking funerary sculptures and imagery centred on mortality and spirituality, including skeletal figures and related symbolism. The space also houses a statue of Sant'Antonio Abate, originally from the now-demolished Convent of San Antón on Punta Mesco. This unique decoration offers insight into how 18th-century Monterosso al Mare communities engaged with themes of death and the divine. What to see here reflects the area's distinctive spiritual heritage and artistic traditions.
