Situada en el punto más alto de la ciudad (unos 150 metros sobre el nivel del mar), esta basílica no es solo un monumento religioso, sino el faro espiritual de los marselleses. Desde su explanada tienes la mejor vista de 360° de toda la ciudad, el Puerto Viejo y las islas de Frioul. El interior es impresionante por sus mosaicos dorados y mármoles de colores, pero lo más curioso son los exvotos: ​Verás barcos en miniatura colgando del techo y cuadros que representan naufragios o accidentes. Son ofrendas de fieles que agradecen a la Virgen haber sobrevivido a un peligro.

Estupenda visita que además es totalmente gratuita. Incluye La Cripta que por si sola, ya vale la pena ir hasta allá arriba y por cierto, hay unas vistas espectaculares sobre Marsella. Además hay tienda, cafetería restaurante y ascensor para quienes tengan problemas de movilidad. El interior de la Basílica es francamente bonito y cargado de simbolismo marinero. Nuestra Señora de la Guarda, está a 149 m sobre el nivel del mar en una colina, aunque francamente me parecía mucho más alto. Fue construida por el arquitecto Henri Esperandieu y es de estilo románico bizantino. Consagrada en junio de 1864. Está edificada sobre los cimientos de una fortaleza de 1536 para resistir asedios. Sin duda una visita obligada por su belleza y sus espectaculares vistas.

La Basílica de Notre-Dame de la Garde o Notre-Dame de la Garde, o mas simplificada o mas conocida entre los marselleses "la Buena Madre", un punto importante del turismo que llega al puerto, esta Basílica Menor de la Iglesia Católica domina la ciudad desde la colina que lleva su nombre, que tiene una altura de 149 metros por si sola, domina no solo a Marsella desde la cima si no que domina todo el horizonte del Mediterráneo, en sí la edificación es una monumentalidad a la arquitectura romana-bizantina, y no solo está la Basílica, bajo ella y excavada en la roca misma de la montaña, está la cripta de estilo románico. Tienes que entrar a ambas, es impresionante sus interiores, aquí no se puede describir la sensación de entrar y ver esos mosaicos. La Basílica se construyo en el siglo XIX sobre los muros y cimientos de un antiguo fuerte que reemplazó una capilla del mismo nombre construida en 1214 que fue reconstruida en el siglo XV, Francisco I retomó el fuerte y lo fortaleció en 1536 para resistir el asedio de Carlos V, En lo personal llegué arriba en el turibús, ahí tiene una parada y ahí mismo lo retomas para bajar, para subir a pie si esta bastante lejos del centro y es pesada la subida.
