About this place

The Temple of Debod is Madrid's oldest structure, a 2nd-century BC Egyptian temple gifted to Spain by the Egyptian government in 1968. Originally built as a sandstone sanctuary, this remarkable monument was dismantled stone by stone in Egypt and painstakingly reassembled here in the 1970s. Located in Parque de la Montaña, it offers visitors an exceptional glimpse into ancient Egyptian architecture and craftsmanship. The temple's pylons, reliefs and hieroglyphic inscriptions remain largely intact, providing genuine insight into Ptolemaic religious practices. What to see includes the inner sanctum and the surrounding plaza, which offers panoramic views across Madrid, particularly striking at sunset.
