In this audio guide, Emily Thompson takes you through Gallo-Roman Theatres telling the story as you walk. In your accent, no need to read signs — just let your eyes take in what's in front of you.

What you'll hear inside Gallo-Roman Theatres:

  • 1
    Great Roman Theatre

The Grand Roman Theatre is Lyon's principal theatre, originally built during the Augustan period with capacity for 10,000 spectators.

  • 2
    Roman Odeon

The Odeón Romano is a smaller theatre adjoining the Grand Theatre, originally used for musical performances and recitals.

  • 3
    Pseudo-sanctuary of Cibeles

Remnants of a Roman religious structure, possibly dedicated to the goddess Cybele, located adjacent to the theatres within the archaeological complex.

  • 4
    Theatre Orchestra

The Orquesta del Teatro is a semicircular space 25.50 metres in diameter, paved with polychrome marble and bordered by a balustraded enclosure.

  • 5
    Scaena Wall

The Muro de Escena is the rear façade of Lyon's theatre, featuring three monumental doors arranged according to Vitruvius's classical design.

  • 6
    Porticus Posterior

The Porticus posterior is a colonnaded esplanade measuring 78 by 65 metres, positioned behind the theatre's scaenae frons.
