Audio guide Tofuku-ji Temple in English

In this audio guide, Emily Thompson takes you through Tofuku-ji Temple telling the story as you walk. In your accent, no need to read signs — just let your eyes take in what's in front of you.

What you'll hear inside Tofuku-ji Temple:

  • 1
    Sanmon Gate

Japan's oldest Zen temple gate, rebuilt in 1425 following a fire.

  • 2
    Zendo (Meditation Hall)

A meditation hall dating from the Muromachi period (1338–1573), exemplifying the zen architecture characteristic of that era.

  • 3
    North Garden of Hōjō

A zen garden featuring an impeccable checkerboard pattern alternating between square stone tiles and moss.

  • 4
    Tsuten-kyo Bridge

The 'bridge to heaven' offering panoramic views of the autumn foliage and temple roofs from an elevated gallery.

  • 5
Hōjō Zen Garden (designed by Shigemori Mirei)

One of Japan's most expansive zen gardens, seamlessly integrated with the surrounding forest.
