Ongseong
The ongseong is a semicircular defensive wall built outside Pungnammun gate to strengthen protection against external invasion. This auxiliary fortification worked in tandem with the main gate structure and remains in place today. It's a notable example of traditional Korean military architecture and defensive strategy from the Joseon period, clearly visible when you visit the gate in Jeonju.

South Gate 'Pungnammun'
The south nameplate of Pungnammun is an inscribed board displaying the characters 'Pungnammun', suspended on the southern face of the gate's second storey. Far from merely decorative, this nameplate carries significant symbolic weight, linking Jeonju directly to the founding of the Joseon dynasty. The two characters encapsulate the historical importance of this location and the gate itself.
