Rectangular Antechamber
The rectangular antechamber is the first interior space of Seokguram Grotto, reached from the entrance tunnel. It connects to the main circular chamber via a narrow passage lined with octagonal columns. Within the Buddhist symbolism of the complex, this rectangular space represents the earth, contrasting with the circular rotunda beyond, which symbolises heaven. When you visit Seokguram, this transition between the two chambers reflects the spiritual journey from earthly realm to celestial sphere.

Octagonal Column Corridor
The corridor with octagonal columns forms the narrow passage connecting the rectangular antechamber to the large circular interior chamber of the grotto. Flanked by two octagonal columns, they symbolically mark the threshold between earth and heaven. The walls feature four sculpted guardian figures in relief, serving as sentinels as visitors transition through this sacred space in Gyeongju.

Main Rotunda (Round Chamber)
The main rotunda is the inner circular chamber of Seokguram, topped by a hemispherical domed ceiling. It houses the central statue of Sakyamuni Buddha, surrounded by his disciples and bodhisattvas carved into the chamber walls. This is the focal point of the entire complex. Visitors view the chamber from the antechamber through a protective glass screen, installed to safeguard the sculptures.

Seokguram Grotto
The Sakyamuni Buddha statue anchors Seokguram Grotto: a white granite sculpture standing 3.45 metres tall, depicting Buddha in seated meditation upon a lotus-shaped pedestal 1.6 metres high. It's the largest unfixed stone Buddha statue created in pre-modern Korea. The broad, powerful torso conveys strength and stability, whilst the serene expression captures omniscience and deep contemplation. What to see here are the intricate details of this masterwork and the peaceful atmosphere of the grotto sanctuary.

Eleven-headed Avalokiteshvara
The Eleven-Headed Avalokitesvara, or Gwanseeumbosal in Korean, is a representation of the bodhisattva of compassion and mercy carved in low relief on white granite. Located within Seokguram Grotto near Gyeongju, it sits on the rear wall of the main rotunda, positioned behind the central Buddha Sakyamuni statue. Art historians regard this sculpture as the most significant among all the secondary figures within the complex, valued for its exceptional craftsmanship and spiritual significance.
