Building No. 1
Building No. 1 is one of three structures reconstructed during the 1980s on the western shoreline of Wolji Pond, located at the southern end. Standing nine metres tall, it's distinguished by a hip roof raised above a flat base. This traditional Korean architectural style remains an important landmark within Gyeongju's historic grounds, offering visitors insight into period construction techniques and design principles from the Unified Silla period.
Building No. 3
Building No. 3 is the tallest of three reconstructed structures overlooking Wolji pond, standing at 10 metres with a hipped roof matching Building No. 1's design. Its most distinctive feature is a scale model of the entire palace complex housed within, allowing visitors to grasp the full scope of the original complex. Building No. 5
Building No. 5 stands as one of three pavilions reconstructed on the western bank of Wolji Pond during the 1980s, erected upon intact foundations uncovered during archaeological excavations. Rising to nine metres, it stands apart from the other structures in the complex thanks to its distinctive square pyramidal roof design. This carefully restored pavilion offers insight into the architectural preferences of Gyeongju's historical residents.
Imhaejeon Hall Site
The Imhaejeon Hall Site in Gyeongju stands as the most significant structure within the Donggung palace complex, so important that the entire area is often called Imhaejin. Built as a separate palace building, it served as the residence of the crown princes of Silla. What to see here includes the carefully preserved remains of this crucial royal dwelling, which provides insight into the architectural and residential practices of ancient Korean royalty.
Spaces A, B and C (central palace buildings)
Spaces A, B and C are the three principal buildings at Donggung Palace, arranged in sequence from north to south. They form the administrative and ceremonial heart of the complex, standing apart from the five structures lining the pond. Together, these buildings constitute a distinct architectural unit, interconnected and central to understanding what to see when you visit Gyeongju's palace grounds.
