Points included in this audio guide

1
Early Christian Basilica of Agios Stefanos

Early Christian Basilica of Agios Stefanos

One of Santorini's earliest Christian buildings, situated on the path to the Ancient Thera site. Originally built in the 6th century AD, it was later rebuilt following destruction, most probably caused by an earthquake.

2
Sanctuary of Artemidoros

Sanctuary of Artemidoros

A 3rd-century BC open-air rock-cut sanctuary on Mount Messavouno, with no temple to shelter it. Created by the priest Artemidoros of Perge, who personally carved altars, reliefs and inscriptions into the limestone in honour of various deities.

3
Agora

Agora

The civic and commercial heart of ancient Thera, set at around 351 metres above sea level. Comprising three successive terraces along the city's main thoroughfare, it served simultaneously as a public gathering place and a centre of trade.

4
Basilike Stoa (Royal Stoa)

Basilike Stoa (Royal Stoa)

The most prominent administrative and assembly building in the ancient Thera agora, built in the Hellenistic period. Originally 111 metres long with a colonnaded portico of seven columns, today mainly column fragments and perimeter walls survive.

5
Roman Baths

Roman Baths

A small bathing complex attached to the basilica, most likely built during Roman-era renovations in the 2nd century AD. They stand as one of the clearest testimonies to Roman presence and influence in the city of Thera.

6
House of Tyche

House of Tyche

One of the more recent structures at Ancient Thera, identified as a Roman private dwelling, though its position encroaching on the agora has led scholars to question whether it may also have served a public function. It takes its name from fragments of a statue of the goddess Tyche (Fortune) found near one of its niches.

7
Theatre

Theatre

A small Greek theatre cut into the slopes of Mount Messavouno, seating around 1,500 and commanding spectacular views over the Aegean. Built in the 2nd century BC, with the stage added in the 1st century AD, it may also have served as the city council's assembly hall.

8
Sanctuary of the Egyptian Gods

Sanctuary of the Egyptian Gods

An open-air cult site built during Ptolemaic rule in the 3rd century BC, dedicated to Serapis, Isis and Anubis. Cut directly into the limestone of Mount Messavouno, it consists of a terrace with recesses designed to house the images of these deities.
