North Stepped Gateway (Bāb al-kabīr)
The principal entrance to the Andalusian Mosque combines a monumental staircase, a qubba and a large-scale portal, appearing suddenly and impressively at the top of a steep street.
Central Courtyard (Ṣaḥn)
Paved in onyx and marble, this spacious open courtyard links the prayer hall to the rest of the mosque. Its current form dates mainly from the Almohad caliph al-Nāṣir's 1203–04 renovation.
Marinid Library (North-East Corner of the Courtyard)
A modest Marinid-era chamber tucked into the north-east corner of the Andalusian Mosque's courtyard, its founding recorded in an epigraphic panel preserved on site.
Almohad ʿAnaza (Central Bay of the South Facade)
The oldest surviving ʿanaza in the Maghreb, dated by inscription to 1209, stands in the central bay of the courtyard's south facade as part of Caliph al-Nāṣir's Almohad remodelling.
Prayer Hall
Unusually arranged in seven east–west naves following the Umayyad mosque of Damascus rather than the typical Maghrebi plan, with a central nave providing the axis of symmetry.
Women's Oratory (Semi-Sunken North-West Sector)
Set into the slope in the north-west corner of the courtyard, this semi-sunken women's prayer space is a practical response to the steep terrain on which the mosque is built.
