Audio Guide Basílica de la Caridad

Description
What makes this place special isn't just its 18th and 19th-century construction, but the devotion it represents for locals in Cartagena. The Neapolitan image of the Virgin of Charity arrived here in 1723, brought by a brother named Francisco Irsino, and quickly became the heart of the city's religious life. People turned to her during droughts in 1789 and 1821, and even during a cholera outbreak in 1850. That kind of sustained faith over centuries gives the place a palpable atmosphere.
The current building replaced an earlier 18th-century church that simply couldn't handle the crowds. Naval engineer Tomás de Tallerie designed this circular structure in the 1890s, cleverly incorporating elements from the original church. You can see this in the rococo altarpiece and the Virgin of Souls ensemble, both preserved from the earlier building.
Inside, the Salzillo sculptures caught my attention immediately. Francisco Salzillo was Murcia's master sculptor, and seeing his work here alongside pieces from his workshop gives you a sense of the artistic heritage of this region. The crucified Christ is particularly moving. There are also paintings by Manuel Ussel de Guimbarda from 1893 that complement the interior beautifully.
The church's connection to the old Hospital of Charity adds another layer to its history. Founded in 1693 by a galley soldier who wanted to care for the sick, the hospital operated alongside the church for centuries. This dual purpose of spiritual and physical healing shaped the community around it.
Pope Benedict XVI granted it basilica status in 2012, and the Region of Murcia declared it a Cultural Heritage Site in 2019. These recognitions feel well-deserved when you experience the space firsthand.
If you want to dig deeper into the historical details, an audio guide is available to walk you through the various artistic and architectural elements. The basilica sits right in Cartagena's historic center, making it easy to combine with other explorations of this fascinating port city.
