Córdoba punches well above its weight. A city of roughly 300,000 people, it holds more UNESCO World Heritage designations than almost anywhere else in Europe — the historic centre, the Mosque-Cathedral, and Medina Azahara between them tell a story stretching back two millennia. Its old town is so compact you can walk between the Roman bridge and the Jewish quarter in under ten minutes, yet every street seems to turn up something worth stopping for. If you only visit one Andalusian city beyond Seville or Granada, make it this one.

What to See in Córdoba

Mosque-Cathedral of Córdoba

The undisputed centrepiece of the city. The Mosque-Cathedral of Córdoba is a UNESCO World Heritage Site and the finest surviving example of Umayyad architecture in Spain. Its forest of striped arches — red brick and white stone alternating in hypnotic rows — is genuinely unlike anything else on the Iberian Peninsula. Allow at least ninety minutes inside.

Roman Bridge of Córdoba

Built in the 1st century BC and stretching across the Guadalquivir on sixteen arches, the Roman Bridge of Córdoba is the city's most photogenic spot at dusk. It leads directly to the Torre de la Calahorra on the far bank, making it a natural starting point for an afternoon loop around the southern monuments.

Alcázar of the Christian Monarchs

Thick defensive walls enclose a palace that charts much of Córdoba's architectural evolution in a single visit. The Alcázar of the Christian Monarchs also contains Arab baths and extensive formal gardens — the kind of place where you arrive planning to spend half an hour and end up staying twice as long.

Judería of Córdoba

The Judería of Córdoba is the city's medieval Jewish quarter, a tight grid of whitewashed lanes where the philosopher Maimonides once lived. The original street layout survives largely intact, and the traditional courtyard houses — many with flowers spilling over iron railings — are best explored on foot at a leisurely pace.

Medina Azahara

About eight kilometres west of the city centre lies one of the most remarkable archaeological sites in Spain. Medina Azahara, awarded UNESCO status in 2018, was the palatial capital of the Córdoba Caliphate. The ruins — including the celebrated Salón Rico — convey the extraordinary ambition of the civilisation that built them.

San Basilio Quarter – Patios of Córdoba

The San Basilio Quarter is one of Córdoba's oldest neighbourhoods and home to the celebrated courtyard tradition that UNESCO has recognised as Intangible Cultural Heritage. The Festival of the Patios draws visitors every May, but residents keep their courtyards open throughout the year — a quietly generous habit that makes the neighbourhood worth visiting any time.

Synagogue of Córdoba

Built between 1314 and 1315, this is the only surviving synagogue in Andalusia and Spain's third best-preserved medieval example. Small in scale but rich in detail, the Synagogue of Córdoba sits in the heart of the Jewish quarter and serves as a quiet reminder of the community that once shaped this city profoundly.

Palacio de Viana

A 14th-century palace housing twelve individual courtyards and a substantial collection of artworks. The Palacio de Viana tends to be less crowded than the monuments near the Mosque-Cathedral, which makes it an appealing choice for a quieter mid-morning visit before the tour groups arrive at the bigger sites.

Audio Guide for Córdoba with Guipock

Córdoba's historic centre rewards slow, attentive exploration — and that is exactly what a good audio guide Córdoba should support. Guipock is designed around the way people actually visit cities: on foot, at their own pace, without having to keep an eye on a group leader or wait for others to finish reading a panel.

The app uses a GPS-guided map that tracks your position as you move through the city. When you reach a point of interest, Guipock alerts you so you can open the guide for that spot — you stay in control of when you listen. The high-quality generated audio is available in multiple languages and regional accents, including en-GB, en-US, en-AU, es-ES, es-MX, de-DE, fr-FR, and more, so every member of your group can follow along in the variant that feels most natural to them.

One practical detail worth highlighting: the offline download feature lets you save everything to your device before you leave your hotel. Once downloaded, the app Córdoba audio guide works without a mobile data connection — useful given that some of the narrower lanes in the Judería can have patchy signal.

Travelling with children? The children's mode presents the same sites with adapted language, shorter listening times, and the kind of detail that tends to hold a younger person's attention rather than lose it. And if you are visiting as a family or a group, the family code means a single purchase covers everyone: each person runs the app on their own device and listens in their own preferred language simultaneously.

There are no printed maps to fold badly or audio devices to queue for and hand back at the end. Everything runs from your own phone, which most visitors find considerably more convenient — particularly on a warm Córdoban afternoon when you would rather not be weighed down with extra kit.

How to Make the Most of Your Visit to Córdoba

Two full days is a realistic minimum for covering the main sites without feeling rushed. The Mosque-Cathedral alone warrants a dedicated morning, and Medina Azahara — being outside the city — benefits from a separate half-day excursion rather than being squeezed in alongside everything else.

Getting here is straightforward. The high-speed AVE train station sits close to the city centre, with hotels and bus stops within easy walking distance — it is by far the most convenient arrival point. Córdoba also has its own airport (ODB), with regular flights operating since 2025; the number 78 urban bus connects the airport directly to the centre.

Once you are in the historic centre, you will not need public transport very often. The distances between monuments are genuinely short — under ten minutes on foot between most of them. The city is notably flat, which makes it well suited to cycling; there are more than 35 kilometres of dedicated cycle lanes if you prefer two wheels to two feet. For longer journeys across the city, the Aucorsa urban bus network covers all neighbourhoods reliably.

Spring is widely considered the best time to visit. Temperatures are comfortable, the famous patios are in full bloom, and the Festival of the Patios in May turns the San Basilio Quarter into something quite special. Summer brings intense heat — temperatures regularly exceed 40°C in July and August — so if you are visiting then, start early, take a long lunch break, and return to the monuments in the early evening when the light is better anyway.

For food, the local dishes to prioritise are salmorejo (a thick, cold tomato and bread soup found on virtually every menu in the centre), flamenquín (a fried roll of pork loin and cured ham), and rabo de toro, a slow-cooked oxtail stew that has been a fixture of Córdoban cooking for generations. The Mercado Victoria, housed in a restored iron pavilion on the Paseo de la Victoria, is a reliable option for sampling several of these in one sitting without committing to a full sit-down meal.
